Sheffield are leaders of Workpackage 7, Integrated process engineering to obtain full value from biomass processing. We also are involved in Workpackages 5 and 6. We are a biological engineering group with a long-standing interest in exploitation of biological resources. We use traditional chemical engineering tools and couple these with modern molecular biology and post-genomics approaches.

For WP7 we will help assess the effects on fermentation of the various pretreatments, saccharification methods and new feedstock developed within WPs 1-6. In WPs 5 and 6 we are concerned with catalytic deconstruction of lignin and on its conversion/fermentation of the resulting products.
