The 1807 Commemorated project worked with seven partner museums to carry out nearly 1500 visitor interviews at exhibitions marking the bicentenary. Using a questionnaire of 18 open-ended questions, the project examined visitors' responses to the bicentenary, the exhibition and wider social issues such as racism and multiculturalism.
Using this information, the following toolkit has been compiled to detail how audiences responded to the representation of enslavement and abolition in 2007. It can assist in the development of exhibitions or wider programmes of engagement, and also provides an insight into how museum visitors engage with traumatic pasts.
