Working with communities to create exhibitions and events is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the work of museums, libraries and archives. As part of their work to mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, a number of institutions engaged in community consultations, partnership agreements and public forums.
Whilst this was an already established procedure for some institutions, for many it was the first time they had engaged in consultation programmes.
As a way of reflecting on this work, and considering how to learn for future practice, the project interviewed community representatives who had been involved in exhibitions, displays or other events.
From this work the following toolkit has been constructed to consider the development of community negotiation across the heritage sector.
