Module aims

This module introduces the role, objectives and activities of operations and supply chain management. The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the fundamental approaches and techniques of operations management and supply chain management based on a sustainability agenda and their selection and use in appropriate situations, and unfold the complexity of designing and managing complex operations within global supply chains.On completing the module students should be able to recommend a sustainable operations and supply chain management strategy for a given business context.

Successful completion of the module will demonstrate that students are able to:

  • Demonstrate a broad understanding of the key concepts of operations management and supply chain management based on a sustainability agenda

  • Articulate the complexity of designing and managing complex operations within global supply chains

  • Evaluate different approaches to sustainable procurement and supplier management

  • Analyse operations using a variety of operations and supply chain management approaches and techniques

  • Apply appropriate approaches and techniques of operations and supply chain management to improve the performance of an organisation

  • Propose an appropriate sustainable operations and supply chain management strategy for a given business context

Subject content

  • The nature of operations management and supply chain management

  • Formulation of operations strategy and strategic fit

  • Operations management – operations management and sustainability, process design, lean management, and quality management

  • Supply chain management – supply chain management and sustainability, sustainable sourcing, and sustainable transport and logistics

Teaching Material

  • These will include: handouts of lecture slides; reading lists, case study materials, group discussions of students’ own experiences
