Module aims

This module provides an introduction to core theory and techniques in strategic management. It aims to introduce students to key theories of strategy formulation and implementation in public, private, and third-sector organisations. Emphases will include the growing importance of ethical leadership and corporate social responsibility. In addition, students will learn to apply theories of strategic management in practice through simulation exercises and analysis of case studies.

Academic and graduate skills

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:-

  • Demonstrate their knowledge of the main theoretical approaches to contemporary strategic management and understand the historical contexts that gave rise to their formulation;
  • Integrate theory and technique in the analysis of strategic options available to private, public, and third-sector organizations
  • Understand a wide range of perspectives on corporate social responsibility and ethics in management, and critically evaluate their practical application in a variety of contexts
  • Reflect on the development of their use of strategy in relation to their ongoing career as a manager.
