Wolfgang Deppert studied Biology and Biochemistry at the Universities of Stuttgart and Freiburg, and in 1972 received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Konstanz. In 1973, Wolfgang Deppert moved to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA, where he joined the laboratory of Nobel laureate Professor Renato Dulbecco as a Postdoctoral Fellow, characterizing the tumour-inducing proteins of the DNA tumour virus simian virus 40 (SV40) under the supervision of Professor Gernot Walter.
