Xerte (e-learning)
Xerte (pronounced Zer-Tee) is an open-source tool, designed for creating interactive, accessible e-learning materials and web pages.
It’s aimed at educators, instructional designers and content creators who need to build engaging, multimedia-rich e-learning materials.
Content can be embedded or linked from virtual learning platforms (VLE), such as Blackboard, Moodle and Canvas, and made available to students.
Key features
- Create a wide variety of interactive content, including quizzes, multimedia presentations, simulations, and more.
- Supports text, images, audio, video and animations.
- Accessibility features such as screen reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, and customisable text size and colours.
- Includes a range of templates and themes that users can customise to fit their specific educational needs.
- Supports collaborative content development, ie multiple users can work on the same project (but not at the same time).
- Create accessible equations.

Service commitments
- Do not upload video files directly into Xerte. Users should embed videos from Panopto, YouTube or similar video hosting platforms.
- Tidy up and bin unused files regularly.
The following policies apply to all IT services provided by the University.
Availability
- This is a live service, available 24/7.

Support
- This service is managed by the Digital Education Team (DET) and IT Services.
- DET are responsible for monitoring, identifying and relaying faults to the Xerte developers. We provide advice and support for local issues during our opening hours.
Standards
- Our service performance and standards have been produced in consultation with our customers, and we monitor the delivery, performance and availability of facilities and services.
