SSH service

Secure socket shell (SSH) allows you to connect to UNIX or Linux computers located on campus when you’re working off campus.

It provides a gateway you can log in to and then connect to the computer on campus you need access to.

Key features

  • Enables you to set up port forwarding to get through other protocols, so you can connect to your destination computer.
  • The SSH service is an alternative to the virtual private network (VPN) service.

Access instructions

  • Duo two-factor authentication is required to login.
  • You may need to download SSH software for your computer to allow you to connect:
  • For Windows, download PuTTY.
    • The “ssh” command is in built into Mac OS and Linux devices.
    • For mobile devices, search your device’s app store for ‘ssh’.
  • To use the service, connect to ssh.york.ac.uk

You can use this service on University-managed and personal devices.
