SSH service
Secure socket shell (SSH) allows you to connect to UNIX or Linux computers located on campus when you’re working off campus.
It provides a gateway you can log in to and then connect to the computer on campus you need access to.
Key features
- Enables you to set up port forwarding to get through other protocols, so you can connect to your destination computer.
- The SSH service is an alternative to the virtual private network (VPN) service.
Access instructions
- Duo two-factor authentication is required to login.
- You may need to download SSH software for your computer to allow you to connect:
- For Windows, download PuTTY.
- The “ssh” command is in built into Mac OS and Linux devices.
- For mobile devices, search your device’s app store for ‘ssh’.
- To use the service, connect to ssh.york.ac.uk
Available to staff and students
You can use this service on University-managed and personal devices.

There isn’t a cost to you for standard use.
Additional information
When connecting to the SSH service, you can create a single master session, where Duo authentication takes place. Following sessions will not require re-authentication.
