Satellite phones

A satellite phone is a type of mobile phone that connects to orbiting satellites instead of the terrestrial cell site.

They provide voice, limited data and short messaging service (SMS) and cover the entire Earth using the Iridium Satellite Constellation.

Borrowing a satellite phone

We can arrange the temporary loan of an Iridium Satellite phone through Vodafone Corporate (using Adam Phones). Phones are supplied with a carry case, car and mains charger and instructions.

To request a loan satellite phone, email unifiedcommunications@york.ac.uk with the following information:

  • the area it is required to work in
  • length of loan
  • name and department of user
  • a work order for the costs to be charged to.

Loan satellite phones can normally be provided within seven working days of receipt of order.
