It uses LaTeX, a typesetting system widely used for technical and scientific documentation.

Additional information
Overleaf are in the process of merging with ShareLaTeX. This will give Overleaf users access to ShareLaTeX Premium account. You can still use your current account (and keep all existing projects) by changing the email associated with it to your University of York email address. You can make this change in the ShareLaTex settings (sharelatex.com).
