Windows desktop

Windows is the operating system used on most University-managed devices. The system is made by Microsoft and supports essential software for studying and working here.

Access instructions

  • Sign in to your Windows desktop with your York username and password. 
  • Windows operating system is available on most University managed devices, including laptops and PCs in our computer labs.

Available to staff and students

You can use this service on University-managed devices.

Funded by the University

There isn’t a cost to you for standard use.

Additional information

Our standard Windows desktop has key tools pre-installed, including Microsoft 365.

To see what software is available for you to install on managed devices running Windows, open the Software Center.

Requesting software

If you want to install software that isn't available in Software Center, you can request it. 

  • In Software Center, use the request new software option.
  • Contact your Departmental Computing Officer (DCO). They can advise where to purchase the software. You'll also need them to install it for you or grant you extra access to install it yourself.

  • Our service performance and standards have been produced in consultation with our customers, and we monitor the delivery, performance and availability of facilities and services.
