cPanel is a website hosting and management platform. It's useful for creating static websites or use with content management tools such as Wordpress.
Key features
- Simple and clear interface with a central dashboard to manage your website and databases.
- Websites can be created from scratch or with the help of a content management system such as WordPress.
- Support for programming languages including PHP, Python and Perl.
- Support for databases with MySQL or Postgres.
- Can be used with custom York-hosted domains, eg your-website.hosted.york.ac.uk or connected to a non-york.ac.uk domains (external domains must be arranged separately).
- 1GB of storage, 10G of bandwidth, support for PHP, WordPress and MySQL. These default specifications can be increased in exceptional circumstances.
Access instructions
When your site has been created you can log in to cPanel with your website URL followed by '/cpanel', for example
https://account.hosted.york.ac.uk/cpanel.
Available to staff (restrictions apply)
Authorised users can use this service on University-managed and personal devices.

You must inform us if you are leaving the University, as we will have to ensure the website is taken up by another member of staff.
Our website hosting is provided by an external company, so all data is stored on their systems. Therefore, we advise against storing confidential, personal and private information within cPanel. Please contact IT Services if you require specific guidance related to data protection.
The following policies apply to all IT services provided by the University.

- This service is managed by a third party.
- They are responsible for monitoring, identifying and fixing faults. We provide advice and support for local issues during our opening hours.
