Canvas VLE

Canvas VLE is one of the University's virtual learning environments (VLEs). It's used exclusively for York Online Masters degrees. It gives staff and students access to all their online teaching, learning and assessment-related materials.

Key features

  • Individual websites for each module taught.
  • Provides access to native teaching, learning and assessment content.
  • Links to related third party tools such as Panopto for videos, Leganto and Kortext for reading lists, Padlet pin boards, Mentimeter polls, and TurnItIn originality checks.
  • The Canvas Student and Canvas Teacher mobile app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Authorised users involved in York Online Masters Degrees can use this service on any device. Students automatically gain access when they register for a programme. 

App and web-based

This service works in your web browser. The mobile app is compatible with Android and iOS.

Training and best practice

The Tutoring Online module can be accessed through Canvas staff dashboard. It provides an introduction to the specific opportunities and challenges of online tutoring. It also offers guidance on developing your tutoring practice and supporting your students towards achieving their learning outcomes.

If you are an online tutor and do not have access to this, please contact vle-support@york.ac.uk.

Service commitments

The following policies apply to all IT services provided by the University.

Support

  • This service is managed by the Digital Education Team.
  • They are responsible for monitoring, identifying and fixing faults. Support is available during their opening hours.

Standards

  • The Digital Education Team’s service performance and standards have been produced in consultation with customers, and monitor the quality, timeliness and access to facilities and services.
  • The standard service level agreement for this service is three working days.
