Rolling infrastructure refresh
An ongoing programme of work looking at how we best maintain and improve our IT infrastructure.
Project overview
The rolling infrastructure refresh programme means we can continue to provide the services needed for teaching, learning and research at no cost to users, as well as deliver the latest technology across the University.
Newer technology is also often more energy efficient so this refresh approach is an important part of our commitment to IT services being as sustainable as possible. A key example of this is our plans to introduce green wifi access points across campus in the future. These access points automatically go into ‘hibernation’ mode when not in use, helping to vastly reduce our carbon emissions.
When?
The rolling infrastructure refresh project is an ongoing programme of work.
Where?
This programme will help us to deliver new technologies and improve existing services across the University.
Why?
Adopting a refresh strategy for our IT infrastructure enables us to introduce new technologies and accommodate the increasing demand for our infrastructure services. It also ensures the availability of essential services for teaching, learning, and research at no cost to users. Additionally, this approach supports our sustainability efforts, helping us work towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
Benefits
- the services needed for teaching, learning and research remain free at the point of use
- key services remain secure and reliable
- allows us to deliver new technologies across the University.
- means we can keep up with the growth in usage especially within research IT, where new science and equipment continues to generate larger volumes of data.
- better for the environment, newer technologies are often more energy efficient
