Making changes to IT systems to make research at York more sustainable and accessible.

Project overview

IT Services provide a number of services and systems which support research at the University.

Our Research IT Programme covers a number of initiatives which aim to improve this support to make research more sustainable and accessible including;

  • replacing our high-performance compute cluster Viking, with a new facility hosted in Sweden. Find out more about Viking 2.
  • working with academics to write more sustainable and efficient code
  • improving the research data management process to ensure we have secure processes to share and store data
  • working to make current research systems more accessible to those without a computing background.

When?

Enhancing research IT at the University is an ongoing programme of work to make research more sustainable and accessible. Our new high-performance compute cluster Viking 2, a key initiative within this project, was launched in its Swedish home in October 2023.

Where?

This work will benefit academics who rely on these systems to complete their research.

Why?

As a leading research university, we need to offer academics a robust and secure service to complete their research.

This programme of work will allow us to support research IT whilst also ensuring that it is accessible and sustainable, contributing to the University’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Benefits

  • reduced power and storage costs for our University data
  • research IT systems will be more accessible to those without a computing background, encouraging use across disciplines
  • sustainable coding and data management systems will help the University meet its target of carbon neutrality by 2030
