Ongoing developments to improve the usability, resilience and security of the IT network across campus.

Project overview

Network modernisation is an ongoing programme of work to improve the IT network across campus, ensuring it continues to meet the requirements of the University community. The aim is to improve its usability, resilience and security, providing a service based around wifi connectivity that ‘just works’.

This will involve refreshing older network switches and wifi access points, improving the physical campus network within and between buildings, reviewing our data centre networks, setting up a new guest wifi service and deploying a wifi service in student accommodation that more closely mirrors what they’re used to at home- supporting multiple devices on the same network with no loss in speed or connectivity.

When?

This is an ongoing piece of work which began in 2022 and is expected to run until at least 2027.

Where?

All of campus will be included in the network modernisation programme. Initially we will be focusing on areas that have older network equipment, alongside areas where network usage is highest, such as the Library, teaching spaces and cafes.

Why?

Having a high-speed, reliable and secure network connection is crucial for everyone in our University community.

Much of our existing network infrastructure is reaching the end of its intended lifespan and ongoing investment is needed to ensure we are able to continue meeting the needs of everyone at the University - today and into the future.

Benefits

  • improving network connectivity, security and reliability
  • improved network resilience with fewer service interruptions
  • wifi as the primary network connection mechanism
  • enabler for other initiatives such as smart/connected campus
