Data Privacy Week

News | Posted on Monday 22 January 2024

This week is Data Privacy Week. As our everyday lives move increasingly online, the week acts as a useful reminder of the importance of online privacy.

The theme for this years campaign is ‘Take Control of Your Data,’ here are our top tips for taking control and keeping your personal information safe online:

  • Choose a strong password which contains a mix of upper and lower case letters and at least one number or punctuation symbol. Read our guidelines for choosing a password.
  • Never share your password and if you think someone does know your password, you need to change it.
  • Use a password manager. Password managers securely store your usernames and passwords for you and mean you only need to remember the master password for the password manager to access your other credentials. Read about our recommended password managers.
  • Add two-factor authentication to your accounts. This offers an additional layer of protection for your accounts as you need to provide your password AND some other evidence to prove who you are such as a code or prompt sent to your phone. Read more about two-factor authentication works.
  • Don’t get hooked! Phishing emails are fake messages which claim to be from an organisation you trust, they often ask you to share personal information or click on links. Learning how to spot phishing emails can help keep your information and money safe.
