Cybersecurity Awareness Month: keeping your University accounts secure
News | Posted on Friday 11 October 2024
Everyone at the University has a responsibility to keep their online accounts secure and practise good cybersecurity.
A cyber incident at York could take out key systems and services and has the potential to affect everybody at the University.
Remember, to help keep your University accounts secure:
- Never share your University passwords. Nobody in IT Services will ever ask you to reveal your passwords and you should never share it. Read our tips on choosing a strong password.
- Use a password manager. Password managers are websites/ apps which securely store your login credentials. This means you only need to remember one master password (for the password manager itself), removing the temptation to use the same password for multiple services. Find out more about using password managers.
- Know what your secret Q&A is. Secret questions help us identify you if you ever get locked out of your account or forget your password. If somebody else helped you set up your University account, make sure you know what the secret question and answer they submitted are.
- Contact the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) if you believe your device has been attacked or compromised.
