Cybersecurity Awareness Month: review apps with access to your university Google account
When you sign up to a third-party service or app such as Uber or PayPal you’re often asked to supply an email address.
Many apps autofill this email address field, so it’s always worthwhile double checking that when you’re signing up for an app or service for personal use, you’re doing it with your personal email address rather than your university one.
If you are signed into any personal apps or services with your university email and you then leave the University, or if we think your university account has been compromised, IT Services will shut it down and you will lose access to any of the applications or services which you have set up using it.
Think about what this would mean for you, you could be locked out of the apps you need to travel such as Uber or Trainline or be unable to access tickets for events you want to attend, if it has been set up with your university account, you could even be locked out of your online banking account
Choosing the correct email address also means that we can better protect the information stored in our university Google accounts.
To check whether you have signed into any personal apps/ services using your university email account:
- sign into your university Google account
- select ‘Manage your Google account’ displayed underneath your profile picture
- from this page, choose ‘Security’ and scroll down until you see the section titled ‘Your connections to third party apps and services’
- select ‘See all connections.’ This will display all the applications and services which have been signed in using your university account. You can then review each of these applications by selecting them and removing access as necessary.
