Glycobiology: Research & Analytical | |
Glycobiology is the study of the structure/function relationships of carbohydrate molecules and the role they play in biological systems. The science of glycobiology has developed rapidly in recent years. It is now known that carbohydrate chains attached to proteins and lipids (glycoproteins and glycolipids) have a marked influence on the physical, chemical and biological properties of these molecules, and that carbohydrate structures can act as signals or recognition markers. Two years ago, investment from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Oxford GlycoSystems Ltd, and the University of York, enabled us to establish a laboratory dedicated to studying glycoproteins. The laboratory is extending its range of operations to provide specialist services in all areas of glycobiology and carbohydrate research suitable for both academic projects and applications in the commercial sector. |
