What is mentoring
Practical application of skills
You should be prepared to:
- Initiate regular meetings with the mentee and be available - within reason - on request
- Assist with any problems relating to the performance of duties which the mentee raises
- Appreciate the mentee's differing experience and needs
- Accept that the mentee will wish to seek advice and support from a range of colleagues
- Respect the importance of confidentiality in the relationship and establish trust. Agree that you will not disclose to anyone else what you discussed with your mentee, unless it is with their agreement
- Evaluate and review the relationship periodically
- Ensure that your mentee is aware of the professional support available within the University to help them with issues beyond your remit as mentor
