Off the job training requirements

Apprentices gain the required knowledge, skills and behaviours of their apprenticeship whilst engaged in the workplace and through formal off-the-job training.

In practical terms, they spend most of their time doing the job they are employed for; and 20% (approx. 6 hours) of their time each week in off-the-job training. These hours take place within their normal (paid) working hours.

Before appointing an apprentice it is vital that you have considered this time commitment and can ensure that your team has the capacity to support the apprentice to meet the requirement of the 20% off-the-job element.
