Learning from Human Rights Defenders series

On February 22, 2019, Algeria witnessed unprecedented peaceful popular demonstrations across the country. Millions of Algerians took to the streets to say “no” to a fifth term for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, and to demand profound change in the political system. The movement, initially a beacon of hope for change, quickly ran into a political deadlock and unprecedented repression, targeting in particular actors from civil society.

In this talk, an Algerian journalist will analyse the developments that led to deterioration in the human rights situation, particularly regarding freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.

DIGITAL WEDNESDAYS: A student’s guide to using generative AI at York

Wednesday 25 February 2026 1pm - 2pm

Organiser: Digital Skills & Creativity Lab
Location: online
Open to: Everyone

Generative artificial intelligence (or AI for short) is being talked about and used all around us, including in universities. In this hour-long bitesized session, the first in a series of AI-related sessions, we will take a look at what generative AI actually is and which generative AI tools are available for students to use at York. We’ll then delve into the advantages, disadvantages, and ethical conundrums that have arisen from generative AI, including false authorship, copyright, and training data. Can we trust the outputs that generative AI gives us? And is it going to take over the world?

This session will be particularly useful for taught students but is open to anyone at the University.

THEATRE SHOW: Palestine: Peace de Resistance

Friday 6 March 2026 8pm - 10pm

Organiser: School of ACT Events
Open to: Everyone

Off the back of a sold-out London run and critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe, Sami Abu Wardeh’s hit show blends resistance, identity, and 'defiantly goofy' comedy (★★★★ The Guardian).

You can run from resistance, but it will always catch up with you – as Sami Abu Wardeh finds out in his critically acclaimed show, fresh from winning a Bestie Award and Mervyn Stutter’s Spirit of the Fringe at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This is comedy where silliness collides with survival. Expect an open call for mass civil disobedience, equitable distribution of hand puppets, and some of the silliest faces you’ll ever see. As a Palestinian born in exile, only to be displaced from his country of birth by yet another war, Sami digs deep into his ties to resistance and Palestinian identity. What emerges is bold, playful and utterly original: a show that asks whether resistance can be funny, and answers with laughter.

Generative AI tools can be used effectively to work through problems or to develop your understanding of a topic, but you need to think carefully about the ‘prompts’ (the questions and commands) you're using if you're to get good quality results. In this hour-long bitesize workshop we will explore how to craft effective and safe prompts for the main AI tools we have at York — Google Gemini and NotebookLM — and how this compares to more traditional ways of finding academic information. We will also consider how to adapt and interpret your outputs, and how to make best use of advanced models and features within the tools.

Wednesday 25 March 2026 6pm - 8pm

Organiser: Careers
Location: P/X/001 Lecture Theatre (School of Physics, Engineering and Technology Building, Campus West)
Open to: Everyone

The event will start with a panel Q&A for one hour, followed by the opportunity to talk informally with the participants.

With recent high-profile thefts from some of the world’s most prestigious museums, the impact of global conflict on cultural heritage and the strong impetus to address decolonising collections, how we protect our Arts and heritage has never been a more important issue.

Join our panel Q&A to hear fascinating insights from professionals working in the sector and find out if this is the career for you!

This is a great opportunity to find out more about these areas of work and prospects for graduates, and to chat to our panel and invited guests after the initial session.

Please note that there will be three panels running simultaneously on the night, followed by networking for all three panels. You can therefore attend only one panel on the night, but will have the opportunity to network and ask questions to other speakers after the panels.

UoY: Careers In... Cyber Security

Wednesday 25 March 2026 6pm - 8pm

Organiser: Careers
Location: P/L/001 Lecture Theatre (School of Physics, Engineering and Technology Building, Campus West)
Open to: Everyone

The event will start with a panel Q&A for one hour, followed by the opportunity to talk informally with the participants.

You'll hear from York Graduates and professionals working in a variety of roles and organisations in this field; they will share with you their insights into how to get into their area of employment, what sorts of things employers will be looking for in potential graduates and a brief overview of their own background as well as taking questions from the floor - so come prepared with questions you would like to ask our panel!

This is a great opportunity to find out more about these industries and to chat to our panel and invited guests after the initial session.

Please note that there will be three panels running simultaneously on the night, followed by networking for all three panels. You can therefore attend only one panel on the night, but will have the opportunity to network and ask questions to other speakers after the panels.
