President Hideo Ohno of Tohoku University awarded an honorary degree
President Hideo Ohno of Tohoku University was awarded an honorary degree at the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology graduation ceremony on Thursday 8th February.
Professor Ohno is one of the world's leading experts in spintronics - making significant scientific breakthroughs and seeing these through to significant technological advances.
In the morning preceding the graduation ceremony President Hideo Ohno kindly delivered a seminar to our staff and students on ‘Spintronics for Green Society and beyond’ which covered the development of energy efficient magnetic memory technology (MRAM) as well as research on probabilistic and brain-inspired computing all based on magnetic tunnel junction devices.
The School of Physics, Engineering and Technology enjoys a close collaboration with Tohoku through the joint York-Tohoku spintronics symposia, first established by Profs Kevin O'Grady and Atsufumi Hirohata in 2011, which led to an EPSRC Core to Core grant and the current EPSRC International Network on Spintronics which Prof Keith McKenna leads today.
