YuCycle Santander staff team funds seven student bursaries

Posted on Monday 22 September 2014

Seven University of York students will receive support during their degree thanks to four staff from the University branch of Santander.

Led by Branch Manager Jack Marsh, the Santander team raised £3,500 in sponsorship when they cycled 50km as part of YuCycle 2014 - an amount which was matched by the Santander Foundation.

Held in June, the community cycling event YuCycle raised over £13,000 for the University’s Achieving Excellence Bursaries. The bursaries help students from lower income families to get the most out of their time at York, supporting them financially as they undertake their degree.  Each bursary is worth £1,050 annually.

As well as getting on their bikes, the Santander Universities team donated a T-shirt signed by Jensen Button to a prize draw designed to act as an incentive for other participants.  The shirt was won by Tom Price, who works for Derwent FM, one of the event sponsors.

Susie Fothergill, YuCycle organiser, said: “Santander have set the gold standard for student support through their participation in YuCycle, showing their commitment to opportunity for all.  We are extremely grateful for their involvement and enthusiasm in encouraging others to take part also.”
