YESI Welcomes New Co-Leads for Resilient Socio-Ecological Systems Research Theme
YESI is excited to announce the appointment of Dr Judith Krauss (Politics) and Professor Rob Marchant (Environment and Geography) as the new co-leads of our Resilient Socio-Ecological Systems Research Theme.
Formerly known as the Resilient Ecosystems theme, the research focus has been broadened to reflect the growing complexity of environmental challenges that humanity faces today. The newly renamed Resilient Socio-Ecological Systems theme aims to capture the critical interconnectedness between ecological resilience and the social, political, and economic systems that shape our world. This expansion builds upon York's existing academic strengths in this area, and opens new avenues for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Dr Judith Krauss is a Lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Relations. Her research explores the intersection of global value chains, conservation, and the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on how environmental protection aligns with questions of justice, decoloniality, and economic distribution. Commenting on her appointment, Dr Krauss said:
"It’s a privilege to collaborate with Rob and the wider YESI team. We’re committed to fostering interdisciplinary work across departments, career stages, and with external partners, to further develop the Resilient Socio-Ecological Systems theme."
Professor Rob Marchant, based in the Department of Environment and Geography, brings a wealth of expertise in ecosystems research. His work leverages palaeoecology, vegetation modelling, and various data sources to understand how past environmental changes shape present-day tropical ecosystems. Reflecting on his new role, Professor Marchant shared:
"I’m thrilled to work alongside Judith and the YESI team on this important theme. The challenges ahead for our planet are immense, but with YESI’s interdisciplinary approach and resources, we are well-positioned to navigate them."
We are eager to see how the expanded theme will spark innovative research, exploring new areas at the interface of social systems and ecological resilience. From understanding the impacts of climate change on communities to addressing global environmental justice, this broader focus promises exciting discoveries and new collaborations. We look forward to the fresh ideas and leadership that Dr Krauss and Professor Marchant will bring, helping to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
