YESI Team volunteer for the Big Community Challenge
The YESI Team were thrilled to take part in the 60th Anniversary Big Community Challenge.
The Big Community Challenge is a month long (5 and 29 June) volunteering environmental project, an exciting partnership between the University of York, York Cares, the City of York Council and St Nicks charity.
The Big Community Challenge aims to help transform wetland areas across the city, linking to the city’s river heritage, as well as here on campus. Activites include creating bog gardens, ponds and wildflower areas, planting reeds and improving riverbanks, among other things.
The YESI team was allocated work on Kimberlow Hill and removed many, many tree guards from the wooded area of the hill. In the process learning that ants like to fill the guards with soil and colonise them, as can be seen in the photos below:
It was great to drive greater change towards sustainability, and make a difference, right on our doorstep.
