New YESI Director appointed
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Lindsay Stringer as the new Director of the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI).
We are currently facing multiple crises that threaten both ourselves and our planet. Feeding a growing population and adapting to the effects of climate change, while protecting biodiversity and the services it provides, requires innovation, cooperation between diverse stakeholders and a willingness to cross the boundaries between academic disciplines.
Lindsay joins us from the Department of Environment and Geography. Her research takes an interdisciplinary approach and focuses on human-environment relationships, particularly: the links between livelihoods and environmental change, science, policy and environmental governance; and the practical and policy mechanisms that can advance sustainable development.
Her research is gounded in systems thinking, using theories and both qualitative and quantitative methods from the natural and social sciences. A systems focus helps her work to develop solutions to specific problems while recognising the complexity of the world's sustainable development challenges and the trade-offs and opportunities created by change.
Lindsay's research dovetails perfectly with YESI's mission and means she is ideally placed to drive forward YESI's interdisciplinary environmental sustainability agenda, as well as promoting YESI's work both internally and externally. Lindsay says:
"I'm delighted to be taking on this role and look forward to catalysing new and exciting interdisciplinary environmental sustainability research across campus, as well as collaborating with external partners in both the UK and overseas."
We look forward to welcoming Lindsay to YESI and working with her in the future.
