China prohibits researchers from growing genetically modified (GM) rice and corn
China’s Ministry of Agriculture has decided not to renew biosafety certificates that allowed research groups to grow genetically modified (GM) rice and corn. The permits, to grow two varieties of GM rice and one transgenic corn strain, expired on 17 August. The reasoning behind the move is not clear, and it has raised questions about the future of related research in China.

Plans to develop a regional powerhouse in the agriculture-food sector...Scientists from the region’s Universities and the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) met agriculture experts and key business and industrial players to explore how they can work together to consolidate their expertise to strengthen innovation and growth in the agricultural and food (‘agri-food’) sector. The Agri-Food Resilience Initiative (AFRI), a collaboration between Fera and the University’s York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI), organised the workshop at the National Agri-food Innovation Campus, York. AFRI is dedicated to ensuring the stability and integrity of agri-food supply chains in the face of the global challenges of climate change, declining natural resources and rapid socio political transformations.

From cultivation to consumption: Fera and YESI seminars to examine agri-food supply stability

Four influential scientific institutions in North Yorkshire have joined forces to decide how the region can contribute to the delivery of the UK Government’s Agricultural Technologies strategy.YESI and the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) organised an inaugural workshop involving 50 scientists covering a range of topics including the socio-economics of food, healthy soil, biodiversity, climate change, how to breed more resilient crops and the extraction of valuable raw materials from crop waste.

Two partnerships involving the University of York have received a share of £100m funding from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) to train the next generation of environmental scientists. YESI and the University of York are partnered with Sheffield and Liverpool Universities as well as NERC's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
