BE@York exists to bring together researchers across the University of York who all have a common interest in Built Environments.

The aim of the network is to encompass expertise in many areas relating to built environments, ranging from physical sciences, through to psychological, political, social and architectural aspects.

BE@York members have a wide range of research interests in the built environment, but have identified three draft themes which capture the key areas of activity and interdisciplinary potential in built environment research at York:

  1. Inequality and the built environment (including health inequalities)
  2. Heritage of the built environment
  3. Monitoring the built environment (focusing mainly on air quality, both indoor and outdoor, but could be used in a broader sense too).

Whilst the group’s research interests are global, there is a strong interest within the group in using York as a focus for research, given its international heritage profile, its circumscribed area, range of socio-economic backgrounds and position as an urban centre in a largely rural region.
