Event details

Are you aware of the harmful airborne pollutants present in your home?

Everyday activities can release particles and chemicals into the air, posing health risks. The exact sources, interactions, and destinations of these pollutants are not fully understood. The INGENIOUS (Understanding the sources, transformations and fates of indoor air pollutants) project aims to explore these aspects and develop strategies to reduce exposure. Still ongoing research, the project will share some of its reflections at the upcoming 2024 Clean Air Conference.

The 2024 UKRI/Met Office Clean Air Programme Conference, themed ‘Analysis and Solutions: Responding to the Clean Air Challenge,’ will be held in Birmingham on October 2nd and 3rd, 2024. This event will gather researchers, funders, policymakers, industry experts, and non-profit representatives to exchange knowledge and foster connections within the clean air community.

The conference will address four overarching themes:

  1. The lifetime impact of air pollution: New tools to address the health impact of air quality on the population, with a focus on vulnerable groups and the importance of both indoor and outdoor exposure.
  2. Innovative developments driving impact: The new methods and technologies developed during the Clean Air program that are improving our understanding of air quality issues and reducing their impact.
  3. From research to the real world: Implementing the outputs from air quality research findings in diverse user communities including communicating benefits, the standardisation of methods and informing future clean air policies.
  4. The evolving clean air landscape: Positioning the clean air community to meet future challenges such as the transition to a low (net zero) carbon economy

The INGENIOUS project aims to explore these aspects and develop strategies to reduce exposure. Their findings will be shared at the 2024 Clean Air Conference.

Join INGENIOUS at the 2024 Clean Air Conference

The INGENIOUS team will showcase their project at the conference, with various sessions and presentations in collaboration with other team members. Here are the details:

October 2, 2024

  • 12:00 - 13:15: Dr. Sari Budisulistiorini will discuss ‘Novel Mobile Air Quality Measurement for Emerging Indoor Emission Sources.’
  • 13:45 - 15:15:
    • David Shaw will present on ‘The impact of air change rates on the indoor air chemistry of homes in Bradford: a modelling study within the INGENIOUS project.’ This study integrates low-cost measurements with detailed chemical speciation to create a comprehensive modelling framework of exposure.
    • Evangelia Chatzidiakou will share preliminary results on ‘Thermal comfort, air change rates and levels of particulate matter in 300 homes in Bradford,’ focusing on conditions that prevent health risks and indoor pollutant buildup.
    • Yunqi Shao will explore ‘The Chemical Characteristics of Particulate Matter in Real Household Environments in Bradford, UK,’ providing detailed chemical analysis to improve toxicity estimates and support policy-making.
    • Nat Easton will discuss ‘Lessons Learnt on Establishing Communities and Engaging Participants in Air Quality Studies,’ highlighting key lessons and barriers in interdisciplinary clean air research.
