Event details
Play for the Planet, hosted by Environmental Sustainability at York (ESAY) and supported by the York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI), links research and practice on environmental games. The conference is an opportunity to share your research or design experience in games with an environmental twist. It is also a chance to find out how to get started using games for education and public engagement, connect with others, play with your ideas and imagine new directions in environmental education and communication.
Play for the Planet brings together educators, researchers and game developers to engage playfully with games as a catalyst for change through education, communication and public engagement. During the event, there will be opportunities to learn, play, discuss common challenges and identify new directions in games researchand practice.
Everyone with an interest in game design and research in the context of the climate and ecological crises are welcome to share experiences, connect with each other and play.
This one day event is an opportunity to:
- Link research and practice on environmental games
- Share your research or design experience in games with an environmental twist
- Find out how to get started using games for education and public engagement
- Connect with others, play with your ideas and imagine new directions in environmental education and communication.

09:30 PLAYFUL START (theatre game with an environmental twist)
10:00 RESEARCH BLAST (8 minute oral byte research presentations/provocations on games for the planet)
11:00 BREAK
11.30 PLAYTIME! (games out/online, use world cafe style engagement)
12.30 LUNCH
13:30 1-UP (post-lunch theatre game)
14:00 LEVEL UP (development talks - how to get started in environmental gaming)
15:00 POP-UP PLAY (have a go at playing a game)
16:30 GAME OVER (next steps, networking, support)
