Welcome to CWS!

Congratulations on your place in the Centre for Women's Studies. We are delighted you are coming to York, and we aim to help you settle in as quickly as possible. The Centre for Women's Studies is based on the first floor of the Law and Sociology Building (LMB), Campus East, University of York.

You will encounter new ideas while here: perspectives, theories, and methods of learning. These pages are designed to help you prepare for your study, including pre-degree reading and 'to do' lists,  module descriptions, and links to our CWS social media channels, where you can connect with current and former students and staff. Please read through them carefully, to find out what you need to do before you arrive and familiarise yourself with the induction programme.

The information on these pages is specific to CWS. Please also ensure that you read through the university's postgraduate welcome pages to prepare for the start of the course. If you are an international student, you should also read the university's international welcome guide for crucial information on visas and getting settled in the UK. This information will be updated throughout August and September so please refer back as you prepare to join us in York.

To Do Now

What to bring

  • As much of your teaching will be online, it is important that you have access to a working computer and a stable internet connection. Some facilities are available on campus but are in high demand. You can find out more about on-campus IT equipment and laptop loans here.
  • Warm clothes! Autumn and winter weather in Yorkshire can be quite cold and damp, so be sure to bring a raincoat, warm indoor and outdoor clothes, and waterproof shoes or boots.
