Asha Abeyasekera was invited to be a panellist for a discussion on womanhood, virtue, shame, and suicide in South Asia hosted by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 17th July 2024.

Asha Abeyasekera was invited to be a panellist for a discussion on womanhood, virtue, shame, and suicide in South Asia hosted by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 17th July 2024. She was joined by psychologist and educator Roshan Dhammapala, and award-winning documentary maker Chandi Jayawickrama. 

The panel discussion was preceded by a documentary film – Her name was Sita – by Heshani Sothiraj Eddleston. The film was produced for the Centre for Pesticide Suicide Prevention, University of Edinburgh. 

Asha drew on her research on ‘honour, shame, and young people’s wellbeing’ conducted with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), as well her previous work on suicide-like acts with Prof. Jeanne Marecek.
