PhD Student Lizzie Merrill goes to (Inter)disciplinary Bodies Conference

Posted on 23 July 2024

Lizzie Merrill, a WRoCAH-funded CWS doctoral candidate, presented a paper at the (Inter)Disciplinary Bodies Conference, held at Brunel University from 25th-27th June.

Her paper titled ‘Rethinking cancerous bodies through Jo Spence’s practice of photofantasy’ analysed the ways in which visual images and visual narratives can express the embodied experiences of people who have had cancer. It focused on Jo Spence’s The Final Project (1991-2) and the visual outcomes of a workshop based on Spence’s method of photofantasy, held with participants. Jo Spence was a British photographer and cultural worker whose method of artmaking altered significantly following a leukaemia diagnosis in 1990.

Lizzie presented in the panel ‘Picturing Illness’, chaired by Christina Victor. She was awarded funding from the White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities to attend this conference.
