Rachel Alsop from the Centre for Women’s Studies spoke on gender-based violence in new migrant communities in the UK at an event held at the House of Commons on Wednesday 26th September. The conference presented the results of the Empower Women project, a 4-year project run by Shpresa, an Albanian community organisation, and Solace Women’s Aid to provide crucial services to Albanian speaking women in London who have experienced violence, including trafficking, domestic and sexual abuse. Rachel Alsop, along with Esme Madill, Justice First fellow from Islington Law Centre presented results from their final evaluation of the project. Other speakers included Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, Cllr Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, and Luljeta Nuzi co-founder of Shpresa.
