Book your place

In a dynamic and interconnected global economy, the role of management has never been more important.

We’ll equip you to be a holistic, resourceful, innovative and reflective practitioner of management, able to independently identify and develop your own specialisms. You’ll be numerically and digitally literate, robust and ethically sound, sensitive to diversity and fully adaptable: a decision-maker able to cope with the demands of the 21st century workplace.

This broad-based degree will introduce you to innovative management theory and practice, with a wide range of specialised modules to choose from. With a more flexible structure than the equivalent BSc, you can tailor your course to fit your interests closely.

Course content

Our business and management, accounting and finance degrees share some common elements in Year 1 to introduce you to the core concepts underpinning these key disciplines.

As you progress, you'll develop the knowledge and skills acquired in your first year, giving both depth and breadth to your learning. You'll be able to choose optional modules to widen your knowledge or bring your specialism into focus.

Study abroad

There are opportunities for you to spend time abroad during your course:

Placements

You can apply to spend a year in industry as part of this course.

Core modules

Academic integrity module

In addition to the above you will also need to complete our online Academic Integrity module.

Year 2

In Year 2 you'll develop your understanding further and explore some new areas of study. Modules build on the concepts introduced in Year 1. You'll explore challenging questions and apply your learning to practical business problems.

You can also choose to add a placement with a year abroad before your final year.

Option modules

You will also study four option modules. In previous years, options have covered topics such as:

Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning.

Learning by design

Every course at York has been designed to provide clear and ambitious learning outcomes. These learning outcomes give you an understanding of what you will be able to do at the end of the course. We develop each course by designing modules that grow your abilities towards the learning outcomes and help you to explain what you can offer to employers. Find out more about our approach to teaching and learning.

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • champion sustainable and ethical principles, engage in socially and internationally-aware approaches to complex business and management situations, and reflect upon their consequences;
  • identify and diagnose problems in business and management by applying management theories, frameworks and experience to specific cases;
  • manage business, management and organisational information by critically evaluating the quality of the evidence base, overcoming ambiguity by identifying gaps and inadequacies, and using suitable methods to collect and collate relevant data;
  • make robust, creative and evidence-based managerial decisions by critically analysing textual and numerical information and data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative techniques;
  • argue for specific management and business proposals and recommendations by presenting relevant and appropriately detailed information, coherently, articulately and confidently;
  • act efficiently and professionally to put managerial decisions into practice taking into account the organisational context together with time and resource constraints;
  • liaise and work with others to deliver team projects, across cultures, in a professional and collegial manner;

  • Individual projects

Our courses are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and development, but with all the support you need available from our academics.

Timetabled activities

In your first year, you can expect:

Lectures3-5 hours per week
Seminars3 hours per week
Workshops0-2 hours per week

These figures are representative of a typical week. Your contact hours will vary throughout the year due to your module choices, non-compulsory classes, exam periods and changes to scheduled activities.

Outside your timetabled hours, you'll study independently. This may include preparation for classes, follow-up work, wider reading, practice completion of assessment tasks, or revision.

In the UK, full-time students are expected to spend 1,200 hours a year learning. That's about 40 hours of classes and independent study each week during semesters. Everyone learns at a different rate, so the number of hours you spend on independent study will be different to other students on your course.

Teaching location

You will be based in the School for Business and Society on Campus West. Most of your teaching will take place in the Church Lane Building, with additional contact hours elsewhere on Campus East and Campus West.

Assessment and feedback

You will be assessed using a mixture of essays, projects and examinations. For some modules you'll produce reports, strategy documents or group presentations.

In your final year you will have some scope to choose forms of assessment that you prefer through selection of optional modules. You can pick modules which emphasise presentation skills, essay writing or exams. You could choose to work on an extended dissertation based on your own research and analysis of a current issue or problem in management.
