Credit transfer and prior learning

How it works

• Credit transfer: We can accept a module credit you’ve gained from another course at York, or a course from another university, as part of the new course you’re applying for.
• Prior learning: We can assess your understanding of certain topics, gained through formal qualifications (known as RPCL) or other non-certificated learning (known as RPEL).

These considerations apply to all undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, including those led by our partner institutions (such as Hull York Medical School). In most cases, prior learning needs to have been completed within five years of starting your York course.

How to apply

First, get in touch with your chosen academic department to discuss your circumstances, then send them a completed application form before you start your chosen course. You’ll need to give evidence in your application, like certificates, transcripts or references. If you are applying to transfer from another university, you will need to submit an application through UCAS.
