At York, our Digital Design with Social Media (MSc) course teaches you key skills and theoretical expertise in diverse industry contexts. You'll develop creative user experience solutions while critically examining the social dynamics and challenges of digital and social media within these different settings.

You'll gain practical digital design experience in our bespoke multimedia complex - including screen-based interactive prototyping tools, graphic design, creative AI and 3D-modelling - and develop your understanding of theoretical and research approaches. 

Graduate with theoretical and practical skills in digital and interactive design. You'll develop team working, project management and communication skills. Build your portfolio by collaborating with external partners including creative agencies, charities, policymakers, and research institutes.

Enhance your employability through masterclasses with industry professionals. You'll be well-equipped to embark on careers in user experience, product development, research, creative arts and design across a variety of sectors.

Course content

You will study 180 credits over the duration of your course, including core and option modules from the School for Arts and Creative Technologies and the Department of Sociology, and an independent design project. 

  • Semester 1 - three core modules
  • Semester 2 - two core and one option module
  • Summer Semester - 60 credit independent design project

Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning.

Final Project

During the summer vacation, you'll work on your extended independent design project. You'll be supported through group tutorials and by a supervisor aligned to your chosen topic. You'll be assessed on the quality of your design artefact and a 6000-word dissertation.

The York approach

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Employ a range of established and emerging design methods and approaches, and apply and evaluate their effectiveness in real-world contexts and projects
  • Demonstrate working knowledge and expertise in digital design skills across a range of platforms and technologies (e.g. graphic design, interactive media, physical computing, VR/AR)
  • Collaborate confidently and professionally as part of a team with colleagues, end-users, decision makers, and interested/affected groups and non-academic partners and clients to design and co-design solutions for real-world challenges
  • Understand the role, impact, opportunities and significance of digital design as applied to creative arts and technologies with knowledge of end-users and stakeholders’ requirements
  • Apply and extend digital design skills and methods to creative arts and technologies, developing interactive, novel prototypes to address real-world challenges
  • Communicate complex design concepts, prototypes, and their underlying principles and research confidently and clearly to professional audiences, using appropriate means (e.g. graphic, immersive, interactive, aural, written)

Students on a Student Visa are not currently permitted to study part-time at York.

For courses which are longer than one year, the tuition fees quoted are for the first year of study.

  • UK (home) fees may increase in subsequent years (up to a maximum of 2%).
  • International fees may increase in subsequent years in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate (up to a maximum of 10%).

Teaching and assessment

Teaching format

You'll learn through a mixture of lectures, small-group seminars, practicals, one-to-one tutorials and masterclasses with visiting industry leaders.

  • Our £30m media complex houses exceptional facilities and equipment to support practical learning and is central to our teaching.
  • You'll learn in bespoke computer labs, with access to a wide range of digital design platforms, interactive media, creative AI modules, and 3D modelling and printing software.

Teaching location

You will be based in the School of Arts and Creative Technologies on Campus East. 

Most of your contact hours will be in the School with your Sociology modules taking place elsewhere on Campus East.

Entry requirements

Typical offer
Undergraduate degree 2:2 or equivalent in an undergraduate degree, with a demonstrable interest in Design.
