This course is designed for professionals and recent graduates with an interest in educational technology from a variety of different backgrounds. It’s ideal for educators looking to develop their digital practices as well as technologists looking to develop their understanding of pedagogy.

On successful completion of the programme, you’ll be ready to play an informed role in teaching, education leadership, and publishing as well as take on a range of roles in the educational technology sector.

Course content

You will take a total of 180 credits, consisting of five core modules, one option module, and a dissertation.

There are two dissertation pathways, research-based and practice-based. As such, this programme can serve as an excellent introduction to work at PhD level or a career in the education sector.

  • Semester 1 - three core modules
  • Semester 2 - two core modules and one option module
  • Summer Semester - 60 credit dissertation

Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning.

Dissertation

If you choose the research-based dissertation, you will develop, design, implement and manage your own original research project, supervised by a member of staff with the relevant experience for your topic.

If you choose the practice-based dissertation, you will develop an artefact such as a set of classroom materials, digital resources or a syllabus, with guidance from a member of staff, prepare a rationale for its design, and reflect on your experience. You must complete the Professional Practice in Education option module in Semester 2 to take this option.

Examples of recent dissertations include:

  • A comparative study of grade 10 ICT curricula
  • Analysis and evaluation of a language exchange app
  • Exploring students' perceptions of using TikTok for informal learning

The York approach

Students who complete this course will be able to:

  • Use an educational theory and pedagogy and a research-informed understanding of educational technology to assess the effectiveness of technology-enhanced teaching practices in different educational contexts.
  • Locate and critically evaluate cutting-edge research and professional literature to keep abreast of emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and inform their teaching practice.
  • Effectively plan for different teaching contexts by selecting appropriate methodologies, digital resources and materials for specific cohorts of learners and learning needs.
  • Communicate complex information and arguments clearly, confidently, and in a professional manner appropriate to the intended audience, making use of oral, written and visual formats.
  • Initiate and carry out independent, focused research or pedagogical projects by engaging in thorough planning, selecting and applying appropriate principles, methodologies and approaches, and taking into account ethical considerations.
  • Collate, manage and critically analyse complex data using digital tools in order to support presented arguments.

Teaching format

You will be taught through a combination of formal lectures, seminars, practical exercises, workshops and online learning.

Facilities

You'll benefit from the Creativity Lab, based in the library. The Creativity Lab is a hub for exploring new and emerging technologies, tools and resources. The Lab offers drop-in sessions and masterclasses, as well as equipment loans.

Teaching location

You will be based in the Department of Education on Campus West. Teaching for this course takes place at various locations on Campus West.

Entry requirements

Typical offer
Undergraduate degree 2:2 undergraduate degree in a relevant subject in Education or Computer Science. Relevant teaching experience or experience in publishing or the EdTech sector is also considered beneficial.
Other qualifications and experience Basic familiarity with computers and digital literacy is assumed. No formal qualifications are required in digital skills, programming, or any other specific technical skills.
