  • Academic year: 2025/26
  • Open to: Students from China
  • Qualification level: Postgraduate research
  • Number available: 10

The scholarships are open to Chinese nationals intending to begin a PhD in the 2025/26 academic year. They will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and China Scholarships Council (CSC) priorities.

Eligibility

Open to students from China only.

  • You must be a citizen and permanent resident of the People's Republic of China at the time of application.
  • You must hold an unconditional offer* for a full-time PhD degree programme at the University of York, commencing in Autumn 2025.
  • You are eligible to apply if you have an outstanding ATAS certificate as your only offer condition.
  • You must fulfil any English language requirements of your offer by the deadline.
  • You must satisfy the eligibility and selection criteria set out by the CSC (csc.edu.cn).

*If you are currently studying the final year of a Bachelors or Masters degree, you are eligible to apply for the scholarship if you hold a conditional offer, where the only condition is the successful completion of your degree or the receipt of your ATAS certificate. If your offer is still conditional on fulfilling English language requirements, you cannot apply.

How to apply

Firstly, you must apply to York for the PhD you're interested in. After you receive an offer of study, you must then be nominated by your academic department for the scholarship. If you are nominated, you must apply directly to the CSC for consideration by the CSC selection panel.

1. Apply to York
Deadline to obtain PhD offer letter: 3 February 2025

You must obtain an unconditional offer of study on a PhD programme by the deadline above. If you are a current Bachelors or Masters student, you must obtain a conditional offer by this date, where the sole condition is the successful completion of your degree. We recommend that you submit your PhD application by early December in order to give your prospective department time to consider your application.

On the postgraduate application form, please select 'China Scholarship Council – UoY PhD Programme' as your source of funding. If you've already applied and not selected this option, please contact your academic department.

2. Receive nomination from your academic department
You will receive an email to inform you whether or not you have been nominated by your academic department. If you are nominated, you will receive a further email by 7 March 2025 to inform you whether you have been shortlisted for consideration by the CSC selection panel.

Please note, nominations are at each department's discretion and they may choose not to make any nominations in a given year.

3. Apply to CSC
CSC scholarship application deadline: 31 March 2025
If you have been successfully shortlisted, you must then submit an application to the CSC on their website.
Applications will open from: 10 March 2025

Please ensure you select the option for the “CSC – York Joint Programme” (与英国约克大学合作奖学金).

How we allocate

The University will notify you if your application has been nominated for further consideration.

If you've been nominated and have submitted your application to the CSC, you can track progress using your CSC account.

Scholarship winners will be notified directly by the CSC. You will be notified via your CSC online tracking account and will also receive a final award letter from the University.
