International (including EU) tuition fee rates 2024/25 entry

You'll need to pay an annual tuition fee for your research degree.

The fees on this page are for one year of study. Full-time research degrees range from one to four years.

If you are an international student and your course is longer than one year, you should be aware that the tuition fee in following years will be subject to annual increases. You should take this into account in your financial planning. The fees quoted in your offer letter are normally for one year of study. Fees are subject to increase in subsequent years in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate (up to a maximum of 10%).

The University reserves the right to alter the level of fee.

You cannot study part-time if you require a Student Visa.

UK (home) or international fees?

The level of fee that you will be asked to pay depends on whether you're classed as a UK (home) or international student.

Research training support charge

Depending on the nature of your research project, an additional Research Training Support Charge (known as bench fees at some universities) may be applied. They are similar to the UK Research Councils' standard Research Training and Support Grants.

Not all research projects incur this charge. It's most common for research in laboratories or involving substantial fieldwork. Get in touch with the department you're applying to if you wish to discuss this prior to application.

Research Training Support Charges provide funding to the academic department for the research project. They can cover a wide variety of items/activities which are essential to carry out the research including:

  • project costs
  • incidental costs of research training
  • travel and conference attendance
  • laboratory consumables
  • books and laptops.

How they are used will depend on your research project. You can discuss this in detail with your supervisor at York. Neither you nor any sponsor owns any equipment purchased with a training support charge. Full title to such goods remains with the University.

Details of this charge will be discussed at your interview and then specified in your offer letter. When you accept your offer, you accept the charge in addition to your course tuition fee. A Research Training Support Charge is payable for each year of enrolment.

Continuation fees

If you need to extend your study beyond the normal period of enrolment due to unforeseen circumstances, you will be charged a continuation fee. The continuation fee for 2024/5 is £450.
