After you apply
So, you've submitted your application, what next?
The next working day after submitting your application you'll receive an acknowledgement email. This will contain your application number. Please quote this in any future correspondence with us.
Tracking and updating your application
You can track the progress of your application, upload additional supporting information and update your contact details online via You@York.
Providing supporting documents
Please upload supporting documents needed to meet the conditions of your offer via You@York. Please do not email these to us as this can cause delays.
If you do not meet the original conditions of your offer, please upload your documentation anyway, as we may be able to reconsider you.
We will acknowledge receipt of these documents by email and will let you know of any outstanding conditions on your offer.
Once you have met all the conditions of your offer, we will email you confirming this, and an unconditional offer letter will be available online to download and print.
The selection process
Your application will be assessed by the appropriate department. We will ask you to take part in an interview; this may be in person, by telephone, or by video conference.
We aim to respond to applications within six weeks of submission, normally sooner. For some courses and at busy times, you might have to wait longer for a response.
If we make you an offer
Your offer letter will be available online. To help protect the environment, offers will not be printed or posted. There are two types of offer that you might receive:
- an unconditional offer - we are satisfied that you meet all of our entry requirements
- a conditional offer - there are some criteria we need you to meet before you can start your course.
We recommend that you read the Terms and conditions relating to your offer (PDF , 234kb)
If you've received an unconditional offer
If your offer is unconditional (or once you have met all of the conditions of your offer) we will send you an unconditional offer letter. Your offer letter will be available online to view, download, and print via You@York.
You can only hold one unconditional offer with us. If we make you an offer for two courses, you will need to decide which one to accept.
If you've received a conditional offer
If your offer is conditional, the conditions of entry will be included in your offer letter. Our offer conditions typically fall into three categories:
- academic
- language: If you're a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability
- reference conditions.
Accepting or declining an offer
If you receive an offer you'll be asked to accept or decline the offer.
Please notify us of your decision as soon as possible. Some courses have response deadlines. Where these are applicable, full details will be included in your offer letter.
If you've accepted our offer you can start to plan for your arrival!
Declaring criminal convictions
After accepting your offer you'll be asked to tell us your criminal conviction status.
We ask all offer holders for this information so we can assess whether or not admission can be granted, or only granted with conditions to manage risk.
Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from studying at York.
If you require a Student Visa
If you require a Student Visa to study in the UK, you will need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You can request your CAS after you have accepted an offer. We can issue your CAS once your offer becomes unconditional, and not longer than six months before your course starts.
