I love the richness of nature on campus and in York. Squirrels and bunnies, beautiful sunsets every day, and gorgeous autumn leaves in late October can be seen from the window in my room. Walking around campus feels safe and peaceful with the lakes, trees and birds.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements below are provided for guidance only. The acceptance rate may vary by course. Other post-school qualifications may also be considered for entry to York on a case-by-case basis.

If you are studying A Levels or the International Baccalaureate, please see our typical standard offers for GCE A Level and the International Baccalaureate on our course pages.

If you're studying the Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho you will need to take an additional course before being able to apply for an undergraduate course at York. This could be A levels, the International Baccalaureate or a recognised foundation course.

For direct entry, we accept:

  • International Baccalaureate: 31 to 37 points in the IB Diploma
  • A Levels: BBC to A*AA
  • Other international qualifications such as AP subject exams and the SAT/ACT

Postgraduate taught courses

For a postgraduate taught course such as a Masters, you would normally need a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution.  Typically, you'll need at least the equivalent of a UK lower second class honours degree (2:2). Actual requirements will vary by course.

  • A score of 80% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
  • A score of 70% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Postgraduate research courses

For a research degree, such as an MPhil or a PhD, you would normally need a Bachelors degree plus either a Masters degree in a relevant subject or some experience of conducting research.

Application support

If you wish to receive extra support when applying to study in the UK, you can choose to be counselled by an agent. The University of York is partnered with education agents for Japan, who are carefully selected and regularly trained by the University.

We recommend that you use the web links provided to research your options thoroughly before making a final decision.

Students who choose to be counselled by an agent should expect the following standards of service:

  • Agent representatives will support you throughout the application process, including advice when preparing and submitting required documents
  • Agent representatives will have full access to your data within your application and may discuss your application in full with the University of York
  • Agent representatives should be honest and accurate when communicating with you about the University, and vice versa
  • Agent representatives will conduct themselves with fairness and integrity at all times and are subject to a rigorous selection and ongoing training process by the University of York.
