Entry requirements

The entry requirements below are provided for guidance only. The acceptance rate may vary by course. Other post-school qualifications may also be considered for entry to York on a case-by-case basis.

Reifeprüfung / Matura 

If you're studying the Reifeprüfung / Matura you'll need to pass the Reifeprüfung certificate with between Mit gutem Erfolg bestanden overall and grades 1,1,1,2 in four subjects and Bestanden overall and grades 2,2,2,2 in four subjects.

Postgraduate taught courses

We accept the following: Fachhochschuldiplom / Diplom (FH) as equivalent to a UK Bachelors. For a postgraduate taught course such as a Masters, you would normally need a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution. 

Typically, you will need at least the equivalent of a UK lower second class honours degree (2:2). Actual requirements will vary by course. The score you will need depends on which university you have attended and which subject you are applying to.

  • a grade of ‘Gut' or 2.5 out of 5 is considered comparable to a UK 2:1
  • a grade of ‘Befriedigend’ or 3 out of 5 is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

Postgraduate research courses

For a research degree, such as an MPhil or a PhD, you would normally need a Bachelors degree plus either a Masters degree in a relevant subject or some experience of conducting research.

All international students coming to study in the UK on a Student Route visa are required to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language. We accept a range of global English tests such as IELTS and TOEFL iBT. Please note English language requirements vary by academic department.

Country specific information

We also accept various school-leaving certificates if you meet the required grade of an English language subject. This includes the Reifeprüfungszeugnis / Maturazeugnis with English at grade 2.

Application support

We don't currently have any authorised agents in Austria. However, you can seek advice from the British Council in Austria.

Immigration and visa applications can be really confusing. We've tried to explain the process as simply as we can.

Visa and immigration advice

University applications can be daunting. To apply to York, you will need to complete an application via UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Here's an overview of what happens when, and how to join us at York.
