Undergraduate English language requirements

If you’re a non-native English-speaking applicant, you must show enough fluency in written and spoken English to study with us.

We accept a range of qualification types, depending on your course:

  • IELTS (Academic)
  • Cambridge CEFR
  • Oxford ELLT
  • Oxford Test of English Advanced
  • Duolingo (except for Hull York Medical School courses)
  • GCSE/IGCSE/O level English Language (as a first or second language)
  • LanguageCert SELT
  • LanguageCert Academic
  • Kaplan Test of English Language (previously KITE)
  • Skills for English
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL
  • Trinity ISE III

You can’t combine scores from more than one qualification attempt, or from multiple qualification types. We must be able to verify your test within two years of completion, but you may have completed the test up to two and a half years before your course's start date.
