1. Get involved in student life

Your time at university is a chance to do more of what you love - and to find new things to love. Learn more of the basics about student life in York and discover opportunities to get involved and expand your experiences, both here on campus and in the city of York.

2. Volunteer and make a difference

Each semester, we have many volunteer opportunities exclusively for students to help you gain work experience, develop valuable skills, and make a difference in the wider community.

  • Applications are open until 9 October for York Students in Schools (YSIS) extracurricular club volunteers and Maths Excellence Club coaches.
  • Current Community Projects include supporting cataloguing WW1 oral histories, researching school English as an Additional Language (EAL) policies, or leading a sustainability workshop with young people.

Apply for these roles and more charity volunteering opportunities via Handshake and join our volunteering mailing list to keep up to date with new opportunities.

3.  Prepare for the Careers Fairs next week

Find out what you need to do to prepare for the job fairs next week:

  • 9 Oct: Law Fair
Did you know that around 50% of new recruits in many law firms come from a non-law background?

In addition to meeting employers, you can get your CV reviewed, get a professional photo taken for your LinkedIn profile, pick up free work clothes at the Work Wardrobe and get help if you’re nervous about approaching an employer.

4. Keep your personal information secure

Imagine waking up one morning to find your bank accounts empty, your social media accounts hacked and no idea where your personal information may have been shared.

Tomorrow is the first day of Cybersecurity Awareness Month. As instances of cyber attack increase and online scams get more sophisticated, it’s never been more important to learn how to keep your personal information secure. Read recommendations from IT Services on practising good cybersecurity and make sure to follow IT Services on X for more tips

5. Black History Month 2024

We're celebrating Black History Month 2024 throughout October. In line with our commitment to anti-racism, we invite everyone to learn with us the diverse stories, aspirations and activism that tackle racial inequality. Read about our actions and what’s happening to mark Black History Month 2024.
