Things to know this week - 23 May 2022

Welcome to your student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Be a good neighbour
Most students who live off-campus do so harmoniously with their neighbours. But excessive noise at un-neighbourly times, and failing to deal appropriately with waste bins, recycling and parking have all caused problems that result in complaints to the University from local residents. Please be a good neighbour to avoid possible disciplinary action.

Remember, you can contact our Student Support and Advice Team in the Student Hub to help with any issues you may be facing in private sector accommodation.

1. Applying for a placement or graduate scheme?

Are you applying (or going to apply) for placements, graduate schemes or internships? If you are applying to large organisations, you may be asked to complete a numerical reasoning test. Our interactive workshop from the Maths Skills Centre on Tuesday 24 May (and repeated later in the term) will give you advice and guidance on taking these tests. Book your place at the numerical reasoning workshop.

2. Nominate for the York Sport Awards

We're proud to be sponsoring the 2022 York Sports Awards. Nominations are open for individual, team, school and workplace categories, including for the Student Sportsperson of the Year award. Nominations close on Sunday 29 May. Nominate someone for a York Sport Award.

3. Association of Commonwealth Universities opportunities

We are proud to be a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), an accredited Commonwealth organisation with a shared commitment to build a better world through higher education. The ACU offers a range of scholarships and studentships, as well as the opportunity to join networks that look to address global challenges. Find out how you can get involved with the ACU.

4. TIER e-scooter and e-cycle freezone trial ending

The TIER e-scooter and e-cycle ‘freezone trial’ operating between campuses is ending on Friday 1 July. E-scooters and e-cycles will still be available to use from this date and students and staff can receive a discount for rentals over the summer months. Find out more about the changes to the TIER freezone.

5. Study success tip: schedule down-time

Relaxation is important to help you manage stress and anxiety. If you never relax, your cortisol levels may continue to build and interfere with your learning and memory. Try a hot bath, watching a film, dancing, meditation, or doing something creative. Schedule down-time into your day. Find out more of our top tips for study and exam success.
