Things to know this week - 14 September 2022

Posted on 14 September 2022

Following the announcement of a public holiday on the day of the Queen’s funeral, we’re sending a special student news summary to update you on some key things before the start of term.

1. Arrangements on the day of the Queen’s funeral and public holiday

Following the sad passing of HM The Queen, we are aware that the day of the state funeral falls on the opening day of postgraduate welcome week and many of you will be arriving or already in York. Here’s some key information about Monday:

Events
As a mark of respect, some welcome events on Monday have been postponed, including the GSA Welcome Festival. Please check event websites, including the GSA website, for the most up to date information.

Food and drink on campus
Catering options on campus will be limited on Monday:

  • Nisa Kimberlow shop on Campus East will be open from 1pm to 8pm
  • Hub Cafe on Campus East will be open from 8.30am to 3.30pm
  • Library Cafe on Campus West will be open from 9am to 7pm

See Eat at York opening times.

Library
The main Library is open 8am to midnight as usual but will be self-service, so chat and email support will be available but no help desk. King's Manor Library will be open as normal, 9am - 5pm. See Library contact information.

Your college
Your college team will be available to help answer any questions you may have.

2. IT Support when you arrive

Whether you’re coming to York for the first time or returning with new devices, IT Support are running extra help desks at the start of term. So if you need help connecting to the wifi or connecting your games console or smart TV to the wired network, go to IT Help Points in the Library Foyer and the Ron Cooke Hub between 12-6pm on Saturday 24 or Sunday 25 September. See our introduction to IT Services.

3. New way to access the VLE

Tomorrow (Thursday 15 September), Duo two-factor authentication will be enabled on the Yorkshare VLE. After this time, you will be prompted to use Duo when logging in. This means that when you log in, you must have your phone with you to receive a code or a prompt. You may already have used Duo 2FA with systems like your email account and e:Vision. Find out more about Duo two-factor authentication.

4. Do you know the tell-tale signs of a scam?

Unfortunately, students can be particularly targeted by scammers in the run up to the start of term. Make sure you’re aware of scams like the Student Loans Company phishing scam and the fake HMRC tax refunds scam. International students should also be aware of the fake visa or police scam. Remember that your username and password are vital pieces of your University identity - you need to keep them safe and never share your password. See our seven tell-tale signs of a scam and read about current scams we know of.
