UoY community update

General election 2024: register to vote
As a student, you can be registered to vote in UK elections at both your university address and a ‘home’ address. For a general election, you can only vote once so you need to choose one address and vote in that area. If you won’t be able to vote in person on 4 July then you should apply for a postal vote or proxy vote. It takes five minutes to register to vote - the deadline is 18 June. Find out more about voting as a student.

E-scooter and e-cycles in York
Please remember, TIER e-scooters and e-cycles will no longer be available for use across the city of York from 31 May, including routes to, from and across campus.

1. Small change, big impact: use energy wisely

With a community in excess of 20,000 people, we have a responsibility for our impact on the world around us and we’re asking for your help to cut energy wastage and, in turn, lower our carbon footprint. For example, lighting accounts for 20% of electricity consumed in buildings. By switching off lights in 100 empty rooms, we could save 716kgCO2e and £760 a day. See other ways you can join in our energy revolution.

2. Refine your writing skills

Now is the perfect time to enhance your academic writing skills. Whether you’re in the middle of writing a chapter, working on a research publication, or just starting your research journey, the Academic Skills Community’s upcoming workshops are designed to help you master the art of writing.

If you can’t make these sessions, you can book an appointment with a Writing Centre tutor who can provide personalised guidance on your writing or check out our online academic writing guide.

3. Want to gain an international outlook here in York?

Do you want to have fun and meet people from different countries and cultures? The Global Opportunities team is offering an opportunity to work with students from Hong Kong next month on an intercultural exchange project. Join us to meet and work with international students and learn about the knowledge, values, attitude, and skills needed for intercultural communication. Sign up for the intercultural exchange.

4. Marking Pride Month

Join us on Saturday (1 June) for the York Pride parade, marching from the Minster to the Knavesmire, where we welcome all members of our community to stand in solidarity with our LGBT+ community. We’ll also be raising the Progress Pride Flag on the flag mound behind Central Hall on Wednesday 5 June. Find out more about our plans for Pride Month 2024.

5. Study tip: take a break

As we’re deep into the assessment period, here’s a reminder that taking a break is a top tip for study and exam success. York Festival of Ideas begins this weekend with a packed programme of over 200 mostly free events. And with topics ranging from animals to art, history to health and politics to psychology, the festival promises something for everyone.
